We really need to think in context. The reality is that our fellow creatures live in balance with the natural world. If that world goes down, we could go with it with a human population that is already about to overwhelm the ability of the planet to sustain it.

With the Indian River Lagoon threatened with death from fertilizer and septic-tank runoff, why can’t we change our priorities? Is it really necessary to have a grass lawn that requires fertilizer?

The origin of the lawn began in imitation of great manors that had them. Everyone else had gardens or nothing. We should think in terms of planting native plants. Not only are they attractive but they nourish valuable insects such as bees and butterflies, which are in desperate straits from pesticides.

We already know how neonicotinoids are destroying bees and what that means for our food supply. Monarch butterfly populations are down about 80 percent because of exposure to products such as Roundup, which kills everything except Roundup-resistant crops. Monarchs, as a consequence, have no milkweed on which to lay their eggs and feed their caterpillars. Because they migrate, we could plant native milkweed as a yard garden plant to help them, and it would not need fertilizer.

We really need to think in context. The reality is that our fellow creatures live in balance with the natural world. If that world goes down, we could go with it with a human population that is already about to overwhelm the ability of the planet to sustain it.
