The Brevard County Commission might ask the company planning new passenger rail service through Brevard County to pay the expense of establishing “quiet zones” within the county.

All Aboard Florida, the subsidiary of Florida East Coast Industries, wants to start high-speed rail service from Orlando to Miami, with stops in West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale, by early 2016. The proposed 16 trains a day in each direction would pass through Brevard but would not stop here.

The company plans to pay for track and crossing improvements, but said it would be up to the counties and cities along the route to pay for maintenance of the crossings — as they do now — as well as for any specialized equipment needed to exempt All Aboard Florida trains from rules requiring them to sound their horns as they approach crossings.

The trains are expected to operate from 6 a.m. to midnight, with maximum speeds of 125 mph. Continue Reading
