One person was critically injured by gunfire and two people are in custody after a shooting in the parking lot of a Brevard County college, authorities said.

Police have detained two individuals — one of which is the suspected shooter — in the incident at the Palm Bay campus of Eastern Florida State College campus, which is currently on lockdown, said spokeswoman Yvonne Martinez.

The suspected shooter was taken to the hospital for injuries suffered before the shooting incident and a third person is being questioned by investigators, Martinez said.

The shooting victim was hospitalized but that person’s name has not been released.

Palm Bay police chief Doug Muldoon said officers have the situation under control. Investigators think the shooting resulted from an earlier assault between the three people involved.

Two men apparently came on campus and attacked a man in the parking lot. After the assault, the victim went to their car, grabbed a gun and shot one of his attackers, Muldoon said.

Security responded within minutes and secured the gun. Officers are interviewing witnesses to fill in the gaps in the story.

The state college, formerly known as Brevard Junior College, has four campuses including the one located in Palm Bay. The Palm Bay campus is adjacent to Interstate 95 on the Space Coast.

The violence on campus comes on the heels of a Florida appeals court ruling last month that struck down a University of North Florida policy banning the storage of firearms in cars on campus.

Florida Carry Inc., challenged the measure with a lawsuit on behalf of a student and single mother who wanted a gun for self protection while commuting to school.

The decision prompted other public universities and colleges to permit students, visitors and employees to keep guns in their parked vehicles.

However, they are not permitted in other areas of campus like dorm and classrooms. The gun rights group is working to overturn those prohibitions at the University of Florida.

Few other details were immediately available.
