Live in seminole county, Dave Mcdaniel, wesh 2 news. A strange set of circumstances puts a local high school on lockdown for much of the day. Students launched a social media campaign attempting to organize fights so they could get out of school. Dan billow is live at merritt island high school. You spoke to students and parents. What are they saying? Well the students are saying thatit was shocking what they saw. Parents are of course pretty upset. Students say the fights have not resulted in serious injuries and some mostly parents suspect all this may be a way for kids to get out of class. The videos of fights around merritt island high school have spread like wildfire over social media. I did see some of the fights at school. They were really bad. Girls getting their hair pulled. It was very bad. Pretty funny actually. Do you think it’s — people are doing it intentionally to try to get out of school? No. It just infaurates me. Parent april believes there’s a lot of copycating in all this with kids trying to disrupt classes, gain attention, and get out of fcat tests. This i think from what i am gathering today is it’s all being done on purpose because they think if there’s, i think it was eight or more fights in a week, the school will get locked down. They put us in fourth period for the rest of the day. And we had to be escorted to the bathroom and we couldn’t use our phones or else we get in trouble. All this about some certain number of fights in the school would close is of course incorrect. Those putting that on social media and putting fights on social media of course the sheriff’s, school resource officer and the sheriff department, the school district are all trying to look for those who are responsible here and promising there will be consequences for those students. Meanwhile, school is off tomorrow.

Students posted messages to Facebook saying that if there were more than eight fights in a week then the school would be closed for a week, prompting students to stage physical fights with each other, officials said.

Brevard County Public Schools Spokeswoman Michelle Irwin said the school’s principal made the decision to keep students in their fourth period classrooms while officials investigated disruptive things students posted on social media sites.

School officials notified the county that they were locking the school down around 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Irwin said. Students were leased from school at 3:30 p.m. The school is closed for Good Friday.

A school resource officer is on campus, but it is unclear if additional law enforcement officials are at the school.
