Jays Take Manatees 4-0 In Suspended Game
In a game that was finished roughly 24 hours after it was suspended, the Dunedin Blue Jays ended the Brevard County Manatees three-game winning streak with a 4-0 victory on Friday evening at Space Coast Stadium.
Dunedin starting pitcher Daniel Norris was originally slated to start the second game of the series, but was pushed up a game due to the rain out and he continued where he left off against the Manatees (9-5) last weekend.
After throwing six innings of shutout baseball in a Blue Jays (11-2) victory last Saturday, Norris continued his early season brilliance by holding Brevard County to just one hit over four innings of work.
The lone hit, which was originally ruled an error, came on a single by catcher Cameron Garfield in the fourth. The lefty had control issues at times as he walked two batters, but battled through and struck out five over the four frames on 78 pitches.
Jays Shut Out Manatees 1-0 In Rain Delayed Game
After a 40 minute rain delay, the Brevard County Manatees’ bats were quieted once again in the second game of Friday night’s doubleheader as they fell 1-0 in a seven-inning game to the Dunedin Blue Jays at Space Coast Stadium.
The lone run of the game came in the top of the seventh inning as a one out, two-base throwing error by Manatees (9-6) catcher Parker Berberet allowed the go-ahead run to get into scoring position.
With two outs, Emilio Guerrero laced a base hit into left field off Manatees reliever Tommy Toledo to drive in right fielder Marcus Knecht to give Dunedin (13-2) a 1-0 advantage.
The Manatees rallied in the sixth and seventh innings, by getting a runner into scoring position each inning, but were unable to come up with the big hit.
In the sixth, Michael Reed reached base on a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Dunedin reliever Blake McFarland.
After a fly out by Victor Roache advanced Reed to third with two outs, Garrett Cooper struck out looking to end the frame.
Second baseman Alfredo Rodriguez started the rally in bottom of the seventh with a broken bat single to left.
Third baseman Brandon Macias proceeded to sacrifice pinch-runner Orlando Arcia to second to give Brevard County two chances to drive in the tying run.
However, Dunedin closer Arik Sikula slammed the door with a slew of nasty sliders in the dirt to strike out both Berberet and Jose Sermo swinging, for his Florida State League-leading fifth save of the year.
For both starting pitcher, their nights ended prematurely as driving rain brought the game to a halt for roughly 40 minutes with one out in the top of the fifth inning.
Dunedin’s Jesse Hernandez and Brevard County’s Chad Pierce were strong in their time on the bump, allowing just three hits apiece.
Pierce, who was on the mound when the delay began, was particularly impressive. The recently activated right-hander struck out five and did not walk a batter in 4.1 innings.
The Manatees will look to end the Blue Jays seven-game win streak when the two meet in the series finale on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium.
The teams will send their two best pitchers, statistically, to mound as right-hander Tyler Wagner (3-0, 1.59) will take the hill for the Manatees against Blue Jays left-hander Matt Boyd (3-0, 0.00).
