When the FHSAA inducts eight new members into its Hall of Fame on April 27 in Gainesville, three of them will be Brevard County legends: Robert Barnes, Gerald Odom and Gary Shiffrin.Barnes was a Cocoa High star in football, basketball and baseball, and even played both football and baseball at the University of Florida. He was an all-SEC pick as a catcher and an outfielder in the 1950s and is a member of the UF Hall.Odom coached at several schools over 40 years, but he is best remembered for leading Merritt Island to state football championships in 1978 and ’79. He was named to the National High School Athletic Coaches Assocation Hall of Fame in 2000 and also was named to the FHSAA’s “All-Century Team” coaching staff.

Shiffrin served Brevard schools for 42 years before retiring a year ago as Merritt Island principal. He was a coach, athletic director and principal, but he left a mark as commissioner of the Cape Coast Conference for more than two decades. He also served on the FHSAA Representative Assembly.

The Hall of Fame was established in 1991. It currently has 156 members.
