Boil water notice impacts up to 70,000 in Volusia County

PORT ORANGE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) –

Residents in the Volusia County communities of Port Orange, Daytona Beach Shores, Wilbur-by-the-Sea and Ponce Inlet have been advised to boil their water before consumption.  As many as 70,000 people have been impacted.

On Monday afternoon, the Port Orange Public Utilities Water Plant noticed a drop in water pressure levels and linked the problem to a damaged water line on Nova Road, south of Herbert Street.   The 18-inch pipe that was compromised is located at a construction site.

While water pressure has been restored, residents are strongly encouraged to bring cooking or drinking water to a rolling boil for one minute before use.  Bottled water may be used as an alternative.

Eleven schools are within the impact zone.  A spokesperson with the Volusia County School District said water fountains have been covered at those school, water coolers will be brought in, and kitchens are being told to boil all water before cooking.

For information, contact the Public Utilities Department at 386-506-5770.
