Florida Gov. Scott signs cut in annual car fees

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – Motor vehicle title and registration fees will go down in September under a bill signed into law by Gov. Rick Scott.

Scott signed the bill Wednesday and made it clear the issue will become part of his campaign against former Gov. Charlie Crist.

Scott mentioned several times that he was cutting increases Crist signed into law in 2009. Car owners will save $400 million a year.

The Republican-led Legislature approved the fee hikes before Crist signed them into law as lawmakers struggled to avoid program cuts in a lean budget year. Crist was then a Republican but is now seeking his old job as a Democrat.

Crist said that Scott has had more than three years to reduce the fees and that they were never meant to be permanent.
