Defense rests in Brandon Bradley murder trial

The defense in the first-degree murder trial for Brandon Bradley rested its case on Monday without Bradley testifying in his own defense.

Bradley is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Brevard County Deputy Barbara Pill.

The judge questioned Bradley on his decision not to testify, and he told her he understood what that meant.

Also on Monday, psychologist Jacqueline Olander testified Bradley didn’t know what he was doing when he gave up the right to remain silent and confessed to shooting pill in 2012.

Detectives interviewed Bradley an hour and a-half after the shooting, and in the video he could be seen falling off his chair, going to sleep and was very hard to understand.

On the recording, he admits to firing at Pill twice. She had pulled him over for stealing items such as towels from a motel room.

Olander also said Bradley was paranoid and believed Pill would shoot him. She said, after interviewing Bradley twice, that his ability to know what he was doing was significantly impaired.

On Friday, a toxicologist testified Bradley was smoking the equivalent of 100 marijuana joints a day and using other drugs the day Pill was killed. Dr. Susan Scully also said he was also using cocaine, Xanax, mushrooms and something called “monkeys.” She said the drugs affect impulse control and judgment.

Prosecutors say Bradley shot Pill when she pulled him over because he didn’t want to go back to jail.

Bradley’s defense said he was on a two-week drug binge at the time of the shooting.

“We found Xanax and cannabinoids in his blood,” said lab supervisor Linda Sullivan.

The judge instructed the jury Friday that intoxication is not a defense to a crime.

The jury could begin deliberating Tuesday.
