Nearly $21 million could be given to unidentified company in Melbourne airport project
The state of Florida may award nearly $21 million to a mystery economic development project planned at the Melbourne International Airport.
State legislators Tuesday are voting on whether to go along with Gov. Rick Scott’s request to spend the money for “Project Magellan.”

If approved, it would mark one of the largest single economic development projects approved during Scott’s tenure as governor. Brevard County officials earlier this month voted to award a grant to cover city and county impact fees.
Lynda Weatherman of the Economic Development Commission of the Space Coast expresses optimism that the company will choose the airport location.
“I feel good about it and we’ll leave it at that,” Weatherman said. “The workforce that we have has been a major hook for us. Generations going back [are] used to, not just technical work, but military specifications.”
Documents show that the company receiving the money is promising to spend up to $500 million between now and 2020. Officials said the mystery company will do aircraft development work.
One group critical of the state’s economic development efforts said the state should at least identify the company before approving such a large amount of money.
A decision on whether the company will open in Melbourne is expected within a month, officials said.
