Three Brevard prep wrestlers pin down semifinals
Three wrestlers from Brevard County made it through the first day of competition in Lakeland on Friday, advancing to today’s semifinal round with a shot at state titles.
Rockledge put two into the Class 2A semifinals: 113-pound Jacob Demming and 160-pound Trace Woxberg. The third from Brevard was Merritt Island’s Ryan Hudson at 113 in 1A. Of 26 area wrestlers who qualified for the state meet, seven made the quarterfinals.
Wrestling will begin at 9:30 a.m. today at the Lakeland Center. The three local semifinalists will compete following a round of consolation. The championship matches are scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
The top six in each weight class win medals, and semifinalists are guaranteed of a top-six finish.
Woxberg made quick work of his first opponent, getting a pin in 57 seconds.
He won his quarterfinal match by a 7-2 score.
Demming advanced by forfeit to his quarterfinal match, where he won a major decision, 21-9.
Hudson (43-6) pinned both of his opponents, first in 2:39 and then 1:35 in the quarterfinal round. His semifinal opponent is Kyle Norstrem of Brandon, who is 68-0.
Following the latest round of consolation on Friday, four wrestlers from Brevard remained in competition.
Those were Travis (126 pounds) and Ethan Ahrens (132) of Astronaut and their teammate Travis Dunbar (220), and Bayside’s David Richards (120).
