Law enforcement officers put their shooting arms to the test to help police officers and their families in need and pay tribute to a legendary lawman.
Officers compete for the best accuracy and time at the 25th annual “Speedy DeWitt Tactical Firearms Challenge” held at the Brevard Sheriff’s Office range.
DeWitt is the stuff of legends, working for BCSO throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s.
He was an investigator on 300 homicides and was recruited by other Florida law enforcement agencies to help with their cases. He received commendations from governors and attorney generals.
“Speedy” DeWitt passed away in 1987.
Two years later this challenge began, and ever since funds raised have gone to help public safety members and their families in times of hardship.
There’s a bit of a different feel this year, as an Orange County deputy just lost his life while on duty this week.
Captain Tom Cockriel is a gun safety training officer with Orange County Sheriff’s Office. He said he’s gotten some heartfelt support here.
“I know they are feeling the same pain, as they have in the past also,” said Captain Cockriel.
Sheriff Wayne Ivey presented DeWitt’s family with a plaque. On it, an etching of one arrest, perhaps the one picture summing up Speedy the best.
Bob DeWitt said this fundraiser to help officers is the best way to honor his father’s memory.
“To have your father’s name attached to something like this means a lot to us,” said Bob DeWitt.
The BCSO gun range is also named after DeWitt.
